Episode #21 Good Happens Behind Fences Part 1(featuring Joseph Burr)
Show notes:
Welcome to Season 2 of a Hat Tip For Hands.
After a two week break, we’re back for episode 21 in 2021. Twenty one is a significant number as it marks the age of true adulthood in this country where one can legally purchase alcohol or tobacco, or marijuana in states including this one, and up until recently, it’s the age when a youth convicted of a significant crime would have transferred to an adult prison.
This week we visit with the help of Centralia College English Professor, Joe Burr, a day in the life of class at Green Hill School, a juvenile rehabilitation facility. Established in 1891, Green Hill was started for kids age 8-18 who committed crimes or who were orphaned. Run separately from the state correctional system, as part of the Department of Social and Health Services, the school's goal continues to be training and reforming youth who have been incarcerated for serious crimes. The school offers academic classes and vocational training and works to help the boys gain new skills for living in the community. When one digs a little into Green Hill’s history, no doubt, one can find a distant and recent past peppered with challenges. One can scratch a little further, yet, to find a spirit of hope, help, and healing within its confines. Joe shares stories, insights, and experience as a visiting faculty teaching college level English to students ready to learn.
I’m painting with words to welcome Joe Burr to A Hat Tip For Hands!
Post Show Notes: Joe Burr is a treasure! Wonderful conversation! Extraordinary educator! Huge heart! Thank you Joe!
