Episode #7: 2020 Intersections and Reflections from a First Responder (featuring Dr. Monti Sorem)
Show notes:
Do you remember those math exercises in grade school where you had to draw circles around sets of ideas or numbers to find a commonality shared at the intersection of the circles, a little like the sesame street game, “One of These Things Is not Like the Other?” Does Venn diagram ring a bell? In Helping my own children with math, I found that the Venn diagram made its way to the top of the conceptual food chain. I thought its importance had been a little exaggerated, and that may still be the case. Alas, while thinking about who I wanted to host for the last episode of 2020, I thought about the overarching sets of major events of 2020 and wanted to interview someone who represented the intersection of the major events of the year.
The winner of this year’s Venn Diagram Award is a friend and colleague, chiropractor turned first responder, father of two, including an adopted child of color, and purveyor of hiking his own hike. He shares first hand experience of the Pandemic including his own experience with Covid 19, his perspectives regarding the issues related to social justice and racial inequalities following the death of George Floyd, and he talks about his journey of changing careers to find the intersection between his gifts and his passions.
I’m leapfrogging to welcome in the new year with Dr. Monti Sorem, firefighter and paramedic with the Tumwater fire department.
Post Show Notes: What a pleasure to host Dr. Sorem! Monti is a salt of the Earth fellow. He has a heart of gold and has been serving others for most of his adult life. It’s easy to feel confident in our emergency services with people of his character on the crew! In his spare time, he enjoys riding with his family, or competing on a dirt bike. As you can see, large, medium, and small sized bikes round out the quiver! I’m tipping my hat to Dr. Sorem for all of the service, friendship, advice, and willingness to follow his heart!
